The chainsaw in Chop A Forest doesn't work like the Axe. You don't click for each swing. You hold left click and the saw keeps cutting until the tree drops. The catch is the heat bar. If you saw for too long without stopping, you get OVERHEATED! and the saw won't cut for a while. This guide covers how to cut with the chainsaw, how to keep it from overheating, how it compares with the Axe, and how the Trial Saw differs from owning the chainsaw for good.
How to cut a tree with the chainsaw
The chainsaw goes in hotbar slot 2, the same slot as your chopping tool. Slot 1 is your fist.
- Press 2 to equip the chainsaw.
- Walk right up to an Oak or Birch trunk. Stop when the tree's name and HP bar show up. Your clicks only count while that bar is showing.
- Put the crosshair in the middle of the trunk and hold left click.
- Keep holding until TIMBER! appears. With the chainsaw, an oak comes down in about 2-3 seconds. Birch has about 3 HP, so it falls even faster.
- Let go, then aim at each log block until CLICK / E PICK UP shows. Click or press E to put it in your backpack.

Don't let go early. If the HP bar isn't at 0 when you let go, the tree stays standing.

A felled tree doesn't give you any logs by itself. You still have to pick up every block. If your backpack is full, sell your logs or load your truck before you cut the next tree.
The heat bar and overheating
While you saw, a segmented heat bar fills up. When it's full, OVERHEATED! appears and the saw stops cutting. A Cooling down timer then runs for about 10-15 seconds. You can't saw again until it ends.

Clicking during the cooldown does nothing, so don't keep hammering the mouse button.

How to avoid overheating
- Saw in bursts. Let go before the heat bar is full, then start again.
- Finish one tree, then let go while you walk to the logs.
- Pick up the logs from that tree between bursts.
- Line up the next trunk and start a fresh burst.
If you do overheat, don't just stand still. Use the cooldown to pick up logs or walk to the next tree. Picking up logs still works while the saw cools down.

Chainsaw vs the Axe
The Axe is the tool most players get first. It costs 150 coins at the TOOL SHOP cabin, so you don't need any Robux. Compared with punching, it brings trees down in far fewer hits. Between swings you'll see a Cooling down bar, then READY! when you can swing again.
The chainsaw keeps cutting for as long as you hold the click. You don't have to wait between swings, but you do have to watch the heat bar.
Here's the short version:
- Axe: you buy it with coins (150). It has a short wait between swings.
- Chainsaw: you buy it with Robux. You hold to cut nonstop, but if you saw too long you get OVERHEATED! and a 10-15 second lockout.
Both use slot 2. For the cheap coin upgrades to buy next, see Chop A Forest Beginner's Guide: Your First Run.
The Trial Saw on key 3 vs owning the chainsaw
Sometimes a TRIAL label with a countdown shows on the left of your screen, under your coins and gems. That means you have a trial tool for a short time. The timer is often around 90 seconds. When it runs out, the tool is gone.
The trial saw can sit in hotbar slot 3. That's also the slot your boss rifle uses after you buy it from the WCT Supply Crate. So if you press 3 before you own the rifle, you might get the Trial Saw. Keep that in mind during a boss fight.
The Trial Saw (5 min) is also sold for 25 Robux. It only lasts five minutes.
Owning the chainsaw is different. It doesn't run on a timer, and you get it in every run. A trial is fine for testing how holding and overheating feel before you decide anything.
Chainsaw Robux price and the Chainsaw Forever pass
Here's what the chainsaw costs:
- Chainsaw (Shop > TOOLS tab): 249 Robux, and you get it in every game.
- Chainsaw Forever game pass: 249 Robux. The official description says: "The Chainsaw in every run you play."
- Trial Saw (5 min): 25 Robux.
If you buy the Chainsaw, you also get the Chainsaw Wielder badge ("Buy the Chainsaw").
You don't need any of these to play. The Axe for 150 coins does the job. If you ever open a Robux buy window by mistake, close it with the X. To compare the other forever tools, like Axe Forever (79 Robux), see Chop A Forest Game Passes: Prices and Which Are Worth It.
