How to Beat Old Barkback in Chop A Forest (Boss Guide)

Old Barkback is the first boss in Chop A Forest. He guards the way into Birch Grove. You don't need Robux to beat him. The AK-47 from the supply crate costs just 10 coins. The one big rule is to keep your distance. If you get close, he knocks you down and sends you back to the cabin. This guide covers how to wake him, which gun to pick, how the fight goes and what he drops.

How to wake Old Barkback

Old Barkback sleeps until you clear Oak Wood to 100%. Watch the green % cleared bar at the top right. It says "Clear it all to wake Old Barkback".

  1. Chop every tree in Oak Wood. Hold left click on each trunk until TIMBER! shows.
  2. Check the (N left) count on the locked fence banner to see how many trees are left.
  3. When only a few trees are left, "The ground trembles..." appears.
  4. At 100%, you see "Old Barkback stirs..." and then OLD BARKBACK IS AWAKE.

The last trees like to hide near fences and buildings. Your cleared % can also slip back a little, so walk around the edges of the zone if you get stuck at 98 or 99%.

One more thing: progress only saves in solo and friend runs, so play one of those if you want to keep your progress.

Which gun to grab from the WCT Supply Crate

There's a WCT Supply Crate near the fence. Every boss fight has one of these crates with guns in it. Walk up to it and press E at "Choose a gun".

Pick the AK-47. It's full auto and only costs 10 coins, so almost anyone can afford it.

  1. Press E at the crate.
  2. On the AK-47, click 10 • PURCHASE. This one pays with coins, not Robux.
  3. Click BACK to close the menu.
  4. Press 3 to equip the rifle.

Only press 3 once you own the gun. Before that, slot 3 can be a trial tool instead.

How the fight goes

With the AK-47 in your hands, the fight is simple.

  1. Stand well back from Old Barkback.
  2. Aim at him and hold left click. The AK-47 is full auto, so it keeps firing for as long as you hold.
  3. Keep shooting until OLD BARKBACK IS SLAIN appears.

The two mistakes that cost the most time:

  • Getting close. If you stand near him, he knocks you down.
  • Using the crate menu mid-fight. If you open the menu while he's awake, you can get knocked down while you browse. Buy your gun first, then fight.

Getting knocked down and getting back up

If Old Barkback reaches you, you see KNOCKED DOWN. Don't panic. You aren't out of the fight.

  1. If you're in a friend run, a friend can revive you.
  2. If not, wait for the timer to run out. You wake up at the cabin.
  3. Walk back past the GARAGE towards the boss.
  4. Press 3 to get the rifle out again, then keep shooting from a safe distance.

What Old Barkback drops

When he goes down, you get BIRCH GROVE UNLOCKED! and he leaves loot on the ground:

  • Gems: walk over them to pick them up.
  • Heartwood log: walk over it as well.
  • Acorn Egg: hold F for about a second. A quick tap won't pick it up.

Beating Old Barkback opens Birch Grove, a zone full of white birch trees. It works the same way. Clear it to 100% and The Pale Stag wakes up. The bar there reads "Clear it all to wake The Pale Stag". Each boss fight has its own gun crate, so check the crate when you get there.
